Dead or alive, he was a unifying force for the Taliban and satisfied an American desire for a clear hierarchy in peace talks.
When the presumed leader of enemy forces is found to have been dead for months and the US did not know it, it tells you how dismal both human intel and signal intelligence has been in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  It also explains another reason why the war is not going well for the good guys.
