Obama still losing voters he needs in November
Barack Obama may be winning a war of attrition with Hillary Clinton for the majority of pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention, but he is making little progress among key voter blocs that have become increasingly resistant to his candidacy.Blaming the Clintons is a cop out. They did not give the bitter clinger speech. They did not embrace a nutty preacher for 20 years. They did not work with an unrepentant terrorist who still hates America. What Obama has won with are the voters that Democrats get anyway. What he is losing are the swing voters who would normally lean Democrat. As he did in a recent primary loss in Pennsylvania, Obama trailed Clinton on Tuesday among working-class voters, less-educated whites, middle-aged whites and elderly voters, according to MSNBC exit polls.
Tuesday's exit polls confirm the results of a Pew Research Center survey released May 1 that showed Obama slipping significantly among white Democrats. A month ago, he and Clinton were tied, 44 percent to 44 percent, but a late April survey found Clinton ahead of Obama, 54 percent to 38 percent.
Resistance to his candidacy from many Clinton supporters could prove costly in a general election contest against John McCain. According to CNN exit polls, only 48 percent of Clinton supporters in Tuesday's Indiana primary and 45 percent of her North Carolina backers said they'd vote for Obama in November. About one-third of Clinton voters said they'd switch to McCain, while the rest said they'd stay home rather than vote for Obama.
"He's got a real, serious problem with white voters," said Texas Republican activist Richard H. Collins. "He's been damaged badly, and we can thank the Clintons for that."

If the two candidates split the remaining six contests, Clinton will need to pick up about 80 percent of the currently unannounced superdelegates to win a convention majority.
Appearing Tuesday night in Indianapolis, Clinton sounded like that was her plan.

He has given John McCain an opportunity to seize.
