Pfleger Pfinally Pfalters

Chicago Sun-Times:

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, who helped reignite Barack Obama's pastor problems by mocking Hillary Clinton, said this evening he's received "thousands of hate threats" since his videotaped pulpit rant.

"They want to kill me," Pfleger told parishioners during a service in a St. Sabina Church chapel on Chicago's South Side this evening. "It's been very ugly."

The firebrand Catholic Priest made his controversial Clinton comments last Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, home church of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor.

Pfleger mocked Clinton for crying on the campaign trail, and suggested it was "white entitlement" leading Clinton to believe the Democratic nomination should go to her -- not Obama.

His speech was videotaped, and quickly made the rounds on the Internet and on television, leading Obama to express his "disappointment" in the activist priest, whom he has known for years.

Pfleger's boss, Cardinal Francis George, on Friday also rebuked Pfleger for his "personal attack" on Clinton, and said he had received assurances from Pfleger that he would no longer campaign for or even mention the names of political candidates.

In his brief comments this evening, Pfleger did not name any candidates, and said he would address the controversy at a Sunday mass at St. Sabina.

"I'm not going to make a statement," Pfleger told the crowded chapel. "My real statement will be tomorrow."

...

I guess he is trying to build attention for his regular service. One thing that should be clear. Obama's opponents have no reason to threaten Pfleger. In fact most of them would probably like to get some more YouTube material from him.

I think it is more likely that some of Obama's supporters wish he would shut up. But, you would never have guessed that from the reaction he got at Trinity last Sunday. In fact, it was probably that reaction more than Pfleger's sermon that persuaded Obama he could not be associated with his old congregation.

  1. It is clear that you haven't seen the entire sermon. Father Pfleger was right America is very racist. He was also on point when he said that we as a nation can't heal untill racism is acknowleged and legitimized . I don't understand why John McCain's ex-pastor can make anti-semtic remarks and that's only a sound bite, but when someone makes a comment about white people being racist or having entitlement issues it's a crime against man. The crime against man is when any race of people feel entilted to anything other than fair and equal treatment. White people get over it!Some of you do feel entitled! Many of you don't know what it's like to feel like second class citizens in a country that was built on the sweat and blood of all people of color.Iets be honest Hillary did feel like she had the nomination in the bag. To be honest so did the rest of the nation. Before you pass judgement listen to the full sermon not just the sound bites from the evening news.

  2. The biggest thing holding back many blacks in this country is their own sense of entitlement. They think they are owed because of slavery they never experienced or because of discrimination they have experienced.

This attitude is why they under perform so often. It is why African immigrants on many occasions greatly exceed blacks born in this country in education.

I have posted two recent stories that are good examples. One is on the Nigerian community in Houston that has a drive for education that is greater than most whites in the area and has left many of them as doctors or with advanced degrees.

One of the most compelling stories is of a refugee from Darfur whose family wound up in San Antonio. This young boy who is smaller than most of his classmates was just elected class president in an integrated grade school. He is loved by his teachers and fellow students for his attitude. One of the things he said stands out. "I came to learn." How many black students fail because they don't have that attitude and are being told by people like Pfleger that they are owed?
