China needs 2 million tents? Who you going to call

China's government has appealed for more than 2 million tents to shelter the estimated 5 million people made homeless by the huge earthquake as the death toll continued to rise.

More than 55,740 people are known to have died in the 7.9-magnitude quake, centered in Sichuan province, with another 24,960 missing and 292,481 injured, authorities said.

As of midday Friday, domestic and international donations to China's earthquake zone had reached $3.6 billion, or 24.6 billion yuan, according to State Council officials.

So far, $273 million has been forwarded to the earthquake-affected areas, the office said.

The central government has said it needs about three million tents to provide shelter for everyone who needs one.

President Hu Jintao urged manufacturers to produce tents as quickly as possible on a visit to factories in eastern China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday, state-media reported.

"I just came back from Sichuan and tents are extremely needed there," he said. "Every tent you produce can help several townsmen of yours."

Yes. If I needed a few million tents in a hurry, I would call someone in China too. I think the country can meet the challenge.

Getting the people out of the tents may take longer, but I hear FEMA has a few thousand funky trailers left over from Katrina.

This sounds like a problem for the Democrats who claim to be masters of disasters. I think we should begin exporting Democrats as quickly as possible.

    As usual, Communist China is only allowing specific news stories in their local press.

    Stories like this one are being covered-up inside China. It is important that Western writers elevate the issue of government corruption and give it the public attention it deserves.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.

Apple's huge investment in US including Texas facility

Blaze: Apple announced a $500 billion commitment to infrastructure in the United States over four years, its largest commitment to domestic spending to date. Apple said it will expand teams and facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Washington as part of its new spending. With a new facility in Houston, Texas, Apple will reportedly double its investment in advanced manufacturing along with increasing investments in AI and silicon engineering. The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.
