China looks to Korean invasion route
Strategy Page:
The chances of a US invasion of North Korea are remote. At this point the US can pressure the regime at the same time it can watch communism corrode it from within. It may soon collapse of its own weight.
For the last four years, China has been holding an increasing number of exercises to test their ability to come to the aid of North Korea, in the event of a war with South Korea (and the United States). On in the event of a collapse of the North Korean government. More Chinese ground units have been moved to areas just across the Yalu river from North Korea (and many of the troops set to work guarding the border against the growing number of desperate North Koreans trying to get out.) There have also been exercises with engineers practicing erecting bridges across the rivers....One of the traditional invasion routes into China has been through Korea. That was one of the rationales for China's intervention in the Korean war after US forces moved into North Korea and approached the Yalu River. It was a grave miscalculation on both China and the US's part. China lost thousands of troops in a needless war with the US and the US also suffered losses that could have been avoided had it been more clear about its intentions.
