Another bad luck ambush for the Taliban

AP/Houston Chronicle:

U.S.-led coalition forces called in airstrikes against the Taliban, killing a dozen militants during fighting in southern Afghanistan that has displaced many families, officials said today.

...

The coalition said in a statement that its troops opened fire and called in airstrikes Monday after observing militants trying to set up an ambush. The coalition had been targeting a Taliban commander transporting weapons.

The troops also discovered weapons and ammunition in a search of compounds in the area, it said.

In other reports, the story indicates that about 150 enemy have been killed in the Marine operation in the Gamser area and about 500 enemy remain to be destroyed in the area.

The failed ambush demonstrates how effective counterinsurgency operations can be. The enemy was discovered trying to set it up by either a patrol or by a surveillance UAV. The Taliban have not had an answer for US air support in these situations. After the ambush forces were destroyed, our forces were able to go in and destroy the enemy support infrastructure in the area. That is a big setback for forces that rely on humping supplies from Pakistan.

BTW, many of those killed in the Marine operations around Gamser were from Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Chechnya, suggesting they were probably al Qaeda fighters.
