Al Qaeda behind failed hit on Karzai?
Al Qaeda in Pakistan was behind last week's assassination attempt on Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's intelligence chief said on Sunday.Pakistan is too busy trying to cut a deal with the bad guys to pursue al Qaeda.
...Investigations by Afghan security forces showed that at least two officials from the defence and interior ministries were involved in the attack, Saleh said. The officials suspected of involvement have been arrested in recent days.
But he added they had links with al Qaeda in Miramshah, Pakistan's tribal region near the border with Afghanistan, and branded the network the mastermind of the attack, the most brazen by the Taliban since their ouster in 2001.
"Al Qaeda's role and involvement in the attack is very clear," Saleh told a news conference.
"They have bases (in Pakistan). They are supplied financially and logistically. They receive very sophisticated training ... We have always said that pressure on their bases, combined with our intelligence can destroy them," he added.
...
The area where the Taliban and al Qaeda play has had ambiguous sovereignty since before Pakistan existed and the new government in Pakistan seems to have no intention of resolving that ambiguity. This allows Pakistan to do nothing while insisting that other countries also do nothing.
It is time to tell Pakistan to either take responsibility for the area or get out of the way. The world should not have to tolerate a nest of terrorist for which not state will take responsibility.
