Is Pakistan ready to get rid of al Qaeda forces?

Reuters:

Pakistan will not allow any country to conduct military operations on its territory, officials said on Monday, rejecting a report that said the United States was considering authorizing its forces to act in Pakistan.

...

"Pakistan's position in the war on terror has been very clear -- that any action on Pakistani soil will be taken only by Pakistani forces and Pakistani security agencies," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Sadiq.

"No other country will be allowed to carry out operations in Pakistan. This has been conveyed at the highest level," he said.

Pakistan fears allowing foreign troops to operate on its territory along the Afghan border would incite a backlash among the fiercely independent Pashtun tribes living there.

If Pakistan was really serious about not letting foreign troops operate within its borders it would take effective action against al Qaeda and the Taliban. Based on how they have enforced their ban on foreign troops with this bunch over the last six years, the US forces would have little to worry about if they took action in Pakistan without the government's consent. If they hope to make an effective argument against US intervention they are going to have to do a better job of defeating al Qaeda. What is really happening is that the government seems to think it is important to deny that US forces are helping them. Maybe they are just shooting a warning shot at the Obama camp.
