Can McCain make peace with conservatives?
John Fund looks at the upcoming CPAC meeting and sees and opportunity. It is not one he is likely to seize. His staff has already indicated that he will not make peace with the talk radio conservatives until after he wraps up the nomination.
The strategy is obvious. He does not want to talk with them until they don't have an acceptable alternative. That way he does not have to make any promises he does not want to keep. He probably feels the same way about CPAC.
A McCain nomination will make the election about the war in Iraq. On other issues there are not that many differences between McCain and Democrats. There are probably bigger differences with CPAC than Democrats on the issues that make him unpopular with many conservatives.
