The irony of the left's criticism of Republicans
Evan Thomas:
They have been dead wrong on the situation in Iraq for a year and now that our forces are clearly winning they remain delusional in the desperate hope for defeat that they have predicted. Thomas still deludes himself that our efforts there have been a failure because he wants us to fail. He wants us to fail because he thinks failure will help Democrats.
He has come up with this bizarre theory of Republicans being dispirited when polls show that McCain beats either of the Democrat leaders. While McCain is a guy that a lot of Republicans don't like those poll results belie his theory. Republicans, like the Democrats have not settled on a nominee, but everyone of the serious candidates is more realistic about the war than Evan Thomas or the Democrats.
...In an article titled "The Party is over for dispirited Republicans" Evan Thomas tries to make the case that the Republicans are in trouble and that Democrats are in the ascendancy. He utterly fails. If there is a party that is willfully disregarding the truth right now it is the Democrats.
What can the Republicans do to salvage their party fortunes and show they have learned from Bush's experience? It is too late to reinvent the party's core beliefs. But the GOP candidates can embark on a more humble mission: to show, in effect, some humility. By examining Bush's hubris, his almost willful disregard for annoying counterarguments, the Republican candidates can demonstrate a greater level of critical open-mindedness and self-awareness—they can show that they are not deluded by wishful thinking and Manichaean narratives. Come to think of it, that's not a bad standard for the candidates of either party. The test of a successful presidency, history shows, is the ability to project visionary self-confidence without, at the same time, brushing aside stubborn truths.
