Huckabee and McCain lead in Texas

Houston Chronicle:

...

REPUBLICANSJanuary December
Mike Huckabee 26% 29%
John McCain 24% 7%
Fred Thompson 12% 14%
Mitt Romney 11% 14%
Rudy Giuliani 10% 16%
Ron Paul 4% 6%
Alan Keyes 0% 0%
DEMOCRATSJanuary December
Hillary Clinton 46% 51%
Barack Obama 28% 17%
John Edwards 14% 15%
Dennis Kucinich 1% 1%
Mike Gravel 1% 0%

I am surprised how much Rudy Giuliani has slipped in Texas and by Huckabee's strength. His natural base is split in Texas where he is considered liberal by most Southern Baptist who broke with him openly in the past. If the choice comes to McCain and Huckabee and some of the other candidates are eliminated by the March 4 primary election, I think McCain will probably win.

In the Democrat race, we already know that Kucinich will not be on the ballot because he refuses to sign a pledge to support the party nominee. It is doubtful that Edwards will still be in the race by March 4 either. I suspect that Hillary Clinton will probably win in Texas at this point in the nomination process. She will not carry Texas in a general election.
