West Texas wind farm get battery power storage

Austin American-Statesman:
Wind power in West Texas is a little less fickle now.

Duke Energy and Kyle-based Xtreme Power on Wednesday announced that a 36-megawatt battery storage project is operational at the aptly named Notrees Windpower Project near Odessa.

The battery project, enough to power 12,000 homes for a limited time, can absorb power from the adjacent wind farm during times of low demand and release power when it is most beneficial to the market. Its fast-acting reserves also will make the state grid more reliable.
...
It appears to be an expensive attempt to make inefficient energy somewhat more reliable.  It is described as the largest project of its kind.  There is no description of the expected battery life.  Hopefully it is longer than your car battery.
