Polls pushed Chambliss decision not to run again

NY Times:

As Republicans Debate Future Direction, One Senator Decides He Will Step Aside

Senator Saxby Chambliss announced his intention to step down next year, amid bracing criticism for his work with Democrats to find a bipartisan deficit reduction plan.
Chembliss was losing in a rout to Herman Cain who had not even announced an intention to run against him. He was losing because he was willing to embrace tax increases that would help Democrats keep their spending ways.  For those who think the Tea Party and its anti tax message has lost it clout, Sen. Chambliss is an example of the mistake Washington politicians have when they get too far away from home state voters.

If Cain does run and win it would give Republicans two black senators from the south.  Perhaps blacks in general would see where their best opportunities lie.
