East coast preps for Irene

Washington Post:

HURRICANE IRENE

Warnings expand as Irene lumbers north

The hurricane is expected to arrive over Virginia, Maryland and the District Saturday night. The storm is on a track that experts have feared for decades, heading up a heavily populated East Coast.
I suspect that inland they will get a lot of rain and wind, but nothing like the wind on the coast itself.  Some areas could be effected by a surge tide depending on the direction the storm takes.  Long Island off New York could be vulnerable to such tides.   Heavily wooded areas could see some damage from trees.  I recall one Texas hurricane where a family left their home in Corpus Christi and drove to San Marcos between Austin and San Antonio only to have a tree blown over on their car while they slept in a motel.  They were about 200 miles or so inland.  Blown over trees are a possibility where the ground is already saturated as it is in some areas along the coast.  Damage from tree limbs close to the house is also a possibility.  I recommend trimming any lime that could blow into the house or its roof.

Good luck to all those in the path of the storm.  We will be thinking about you.
