A final salute from dad

Houston Chronical:

Just before the flag-draped casket of Phillip George closed for the final time following his funeral Thursday, the fallen U.S. Marine's father stood alone at the front of Grace Community Church.

There, amid brightly colored floral sprays, a framed photograph of the young lance corporal in uniform and a cross swathed in patriotic ribbon, Carson George slowly raised his right hand toward his forehead.

With his arm quivering, the Vietnam veteran gave his son, who was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 18 during a rebel ambush, an eternal salute.

"He was a proud Marine," George said. "Few of us ever say that. We go through life wishing we had done this or wishing we done that, but he did what he wanted to do. I'm so proud of him."
