Texas passes law protecting clergy choice in gay marriage

Houston Chronicle:
A bill affirming the clergy and church's authority to refuse to perform same-sex marriage won widespread support in the Texas House, leaving it one step from the desk of Gov. Greg Abbott, who has pledged to sign it into law.

The state House on Thursday approved Senate Bill 2065 by a vote of 141-2 on second reading. The bill protects a religious organization or affiliated individual, such as a member of the clergy or officiant, from being sued if he or it refuses to perform a same-sex marriage. The bill would allow them to refuse to officiate or "provide services, accommodations, facilities, goods or privileges" for any marriage ceremony that would "cause the organization or individual to violate a sincerely held religious belief."

Two openly gay members also supported the bill.  The two opposing votes were from Democrats.  Voters tend to support this idea.
