A former Democratic state senator and three other people were charged with corruption Thursday in a case that a former federal prosecutor has told Congress he believes led to his firing. Why did the NY Times bury this story instead of putting it on page one. It goes against their narrative that there was something wrong with the firing of the US Attorneys. It supports the Bush administrations contentions that the case should have been more aggressively prosecuted. It would have undercut today's lead story that a witness has a different recollection about events leading to the firings. In other words it would have undercut the phony scadal theme they have been pushing.
A federal grand jury accused the senator and former president pro tem of the New Mexico Senate, Manny Aragon, and the others of conspiring to skim $4.2 million in public funds meant for construction of a county courthouse.
David Iglesias, one of eight United States attorneys removed late last year, told Congress this month that he had rejected what he believed to be pressure from Senator Pete V. Domenici and Representative Heather A. Wilson, Republicans of New Mexico, to rush the indictments, which would have hurt Democrats in the November elections.
Spokesmen for Mr. Domenici and Ms. Wilson, who was in a hotly contested race at the time, said Thursday they would have no comment.
