Liberators

In Iraq the Marines are seen as liberators in their area of responsibility among the Shia.

"...Why is the atmosphere so different here?

"The answer: Most of the people here are Shiite Muslims. More than 60 percent of Iraq's population is Shiite, but under Saddam Hussein (and others before him) the Shiites have been marginalized. And oppressed.

"And so the U.S. Marines who oversee this region are seen not as conquerors, but liberators."

"...'What has changed for you now that Saddam is gone?' I ask Nebras, an elementary school teacher.

"'Freedom,' she says.

"Her 18-year-old brother, Haider, adds, 'Before we were afraid to say anything and now we have freedom, we can say anything we want.'"

This report came from ABC News.
