Schumer and Dems cave on continuing resolution
In a move that has sent many Congressional Democrats over the edge, Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced in a floor speech Thursday night that he was caving on the issue of the continuing resolution, and would support it - with the rationale being that a government shutdown would allegedly give President Trump too much power.
"[A] shutdown would give Donald Trump and Elon Musk carte blanche to destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now," Schumer proclaimed, as we previously reported, while also adding later in so many words that he was worried his party might get blamed.
"President Trump and Republican leaders would like nothing more than to pull us into the mud of a protracted government shutdown," Schumer said. "For Donald Trump, a shutdown would be a gift."
While rumors are already swirling about a possible 2028 challenge for Schumer in the form of Rep. Alexandia Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Trump took a victory lap of sorts in a message shared on his Truth Social platform Friday morning, praising Schumer for having the "guts" to fold (LOL):
Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took “guts” and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation. A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights. Again, really good and smart move by Senator Schumer. This could lead to something big for the USA, a whole new direction and beginning! DJT
I don't think it could get much worse for Schumer at this point among members of his party with incoming praise from the Democrats' Public Enemy Number One. Trump no doubt knew exactly what he was doing here, adding more fuel to the Democrat fire at a time when they're already floating the idea of Schumer being primaried in three years.
...
Schumer may have his faults, but I think he is much smarter than AOC who would be a likely disaster for the Democrats if she became the leader of the party. I suspect the Democrat polling on the issue showed that Schumer made the right move.
