Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has become deeply entangled with former President Trump in the homestretch of the presidential election.
Why it matters: The Telsa and SpaceX CEO and X owner's political activism is a hard pivot from originally claiming he wouldn't donate to campaigns to pouring tens of millions of dollars into Trump's campaign and saying he's "f---ed" if Trump loses.
- His involvement is "unparalleled in modern history," the New York Times reported.
- Trump's campaign didn't immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
State of play: Musk has been speaking to Trump multiple times per week and poured funding into get out the vote operations for Trump. He may even knock on doors himself in the battleground state.
- On X, Musk has touted Trump, promoted far-right conspiracy theories and bashed Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.
By the numbers: Musk's America PAC has spent about $80 million to help Trump, per federal records, the NYT reported.
- His initial budget was $140 to $180 million.
Context: The billionaire joined Trump at a rally for the first time on Saturday.
...
It should not be hard to understand why he is supporting Trump. The economy was in much better shape under Trump and the world was more peaceful. There is also the concern that Kamala Harris is an intellectual lightweight with few good ideas, Harris has been propped up by the Democrats' election machine but is having trouble attracting many voters.
