24 tons of Tito's hand sanitizer coming to market

Houston Chronicle:
After warning people not to use its vodka to make hand sanitizer, Tito’s Handmade Vodka announced on Monday that it is working on the real deal. The Austin-based company is set to produce and distribute 24 tons of hand sanitizer to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our team at the distillery has been working hard to get all of the pieces in place to begin production on a hand sanitizer that adheres to industry and governmental guidance,” The company said in the release.

Last week, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) announced it is authorizing the production of ethanol-based hand sanitizers by permitted distillers.

Tito’s is currently testing the formula and preparing for production with enough ingredients and equipment to make an initial 24 tons of hand sanitizer. The solution must contain 60 percent alcohol, making the company’s staple of handmade vodka, made with 40 percent, inefficient for this purpose.

The brand will offer its sanitizer for free to the community and to those who are most in need.

People looking for hand sanitizers in Austin are apparently in luck.  I suspect this will be happening in other areas of the country.  There is a lot of ethanol in storage right now because agribusinesses can't sell as much to gas producers to be used as motor fuel.  Tito's is a popular Texas vodka.  I wonder if Corona beer has thought of this.
