The conservative publications lost their way by opposing Trump

Mark Steyn talks mainly about the downfall of the National Review and The Weekly Standard in his critique of the Never Trumpers.   Mark certainly jumped on the Trump bandwagon before I did, but the main reason I never joined the Never Trumpers is that the alternative was just too unappealing.

I think these publications lost their way because they did not recognize that much of their support came from people who rejected the evils of liberalism.  Trump has been more than adequate in pushing back against Democrats and their agenda.  In fact, he has been more effective in doing so than the conservative media has been in the past.

Trump has adopted many of the conservative ideas we have always supported and these publications rejected him for stylistic reasons and to some extent, they fell for the Russian collusion hoax perpetrated by Hillary Clinton and her paid political assassins at Fusion GPS.  I find it rather sad that people I once respected were victims of one of the greatest political frauds in US history.  That was not Trump's fault.  It was their own.

Trump's approach to politics will never be as smooth as Ronald Reagan, but it does not have to be for him to be successful.  What he has to do is to continue to be effective at thwarting Democrats and their agenda.  Some of his greatest successes are the result of his not being timid about pushing issues that motivate conservatives in the first place.  The policies he has embraced have grown the economy and at the same time thwarted enemies such as ISIS and Iran.

Trump is not someone cowed by the prospect of supporting Israel in full.  It is really interesting that in doing so, some of Israel's former enemies in the Middle East now see Israel as an ally in pushing back the evils of Iranian aggression.

When you see the reaction of the Democrats to the actions against Iran's terror leader Soleimani you understand why they were so ineffective in dealing with Iran.  Instead of providing billions to that regime to be used in its proxy wars Trump has taken action against their economy which actually hampers their agenda and has greatly weakened one of the worse regimes in the world.

The Democrats' impeachment scam is a reflection of their own desperation as they continue to lose to Trump on policies.  I think the only reason they were able to take back the House in 2018 was because of the success of the Russian collusion hoax that was supported by the mainstream media.  Now that it has been exposed the Democrats should be vulnerable to being defeated in 2020 and losing their House majority.  The Democrats certainly do not have a record of accomplishment to run on and their Presidential candidates have adopted extreme ideas that would destroy the US economy and make it weaker in dealing with rogue powers.

In 2016 I was a reluctant Trump voter.  I will be an enthusiastic Trump voter in 2020.  To the extent that conservative publications are still viable, they would be wise to do the same.
