Will there be a cruise missile response to WMD attacks in Syria?
NY Times:
It is still puzzling that Syria would launch such an attack at a time when the UN is sending in inspectors to look for evidence of the use of WMD. That they would do it at a time when they appear to be winning the fight with the rebels suggest their advantage maybe overstated and they may be under greater distress than previously thought. The use of the WMD appears to likely trigger even greater support for the rebels. The attack had little strategic significance as a matter of destroying the fight capability of an adversary, since almost all the victims were non combatant women and children. That is another puzzling aspect of the attack that makes it look like the rebels stand to gain the most from it.
My speculation is that a cruise missile strike is the most likely military response if there is to be one. It would probably be targeting WMD sites and weapon systems used to deliver WMD. The potential strike would also probably target Syria's air assets.Obama Officials Weigh Response to Syria Assault
Amid a growing belief that chemical weapons were used in the attack, senior officials met at the White House on Thursday to debate options that could range from a cruise missile strike to a more sustained air campaign.
