If Obama were really interested in striking a deal with Republicans rather than engaging in political posturing, he would frame an argument that at least addressed the issue that animates the Republican position rather than creating a straw man argument about Republican affection for the rich.
One of Obama's problems in striking a deal with Republicans is that he attempts to invalidate their feelings and ignore their arguments. Republicans don't think raising taxes on "the rich" benefits the middle class or the poor.
