Reuters:
Al Qaeda's richest faction dominant in north Mali: U.S.
While the article says they got a lot of money from kidnap ransoms, I think their big source of funds comes from transported drugs smuggled into West Africa from Venezuela.  This al Qaeda group then transports it into Europe.  It is not clear why the US Africa Command is unaware of this activity.
