UT, OU team up to send blankets to Afghanistan
A good spirited competition will warm some poor Afghans who don't have the traditional blankets called Afghans. The Taliban did not compete to supply blankets.Despite being half a world from home, a San Antonio airman is savoring visions of a holiday season in Afghanistan that may last a lifetime.
At the center of Maj. Tobin Griffeth's Christmas tale, one with lots of heart and a Texas twist, are hundreds of Afghan people aided by a college football rivalry that turned into a goodwill mission.
Fans of the University of Texas and University of Oklahoma have sent 434 boxes of blankets, coats, shoes and other items to his office at Bagram Air Field to help impoverished Afghans survive the harsh winter, said Griffeth, a military lawyer based at Randolph AFB.
“This brought together Sooners and Longhorns, Afghans and Americans, the needy and the blessed, and it brought out love and giving from people in Canada and all across the United States,” he wrote in an e-mail this week.
The project also has united Muslims and Christians, including Mormons, Lutherans and Catholics.
