Repressive Iran arrest opposition leaders

NY Times:

A day after violent protests rocked cities across Iran, the authorities arrested a number of opposition figures, Iranian Web sites reported, including three top aides to the opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi and Ibrahim Yazdi, leader of the banned Iran Freedom Movement.

Also on Monday, the opposition cleric and reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi lashed out at the authorities for using deadly force during Sunday’s nationwide protests, in which 10 people were reported to have been killed.

“What has happened to this religious system that it orders the killing of innocent people during the holy day of Ashura?” Mr. Karroubi said in a statement, according to the opposition Jaras Web site.

Also on Monday, police used tear gas to disperse a group of mourners who gathered outside the Tehran hospital where the body of Mr. Moussavi’s nephew, Ali Moussavi, had been held, the Nowrooz Web site reported. A prominent opposition figure said the younger Mr. Moussavi was shot to death by assassins on Sunday, and that the authorities took his body to prevent a funeral ceremony.

Clearly the government and its militias are panicked about their unpopularity. This kind fo repression will only make them even more unpopular. The people of Iran are fed up with the religious bigots in charge. They are very close to a general uprising that could lead to the overthrow of this odious regime. While there have been some noises from teh State Department that we are on the side of the people, Obama decided to play golf instead of making a statement himself.
