San Antonio base new headquarters for Cyber Command

Lackland AFB in San Antonio is being selected by Air Force officials as the headquarters for a new cyber command, an official close to the selection process said late Thursday.

The Air Force is expected to make the selection official today, but lawmakers representing states and cities with potential sites were being notified in advance of the announcement.

Lackland was selected by the Air Force as the best of several other candidates for the headquarters, which would mean an influx of infrastructure, security and 400 staffers.

The headquarters will include the commander's staff and an operations center.

The operations primarily will focus on defending Air Force computers against cyber attack and preventing computer disruptions.

The selected site for the cyber command now must undergo an environmental impact assessment.

...

That last quoted sentence caught my eye because it seems so silly. I assume that the new command will be using computers in their job, but I am willing to speculate that the location has had computers in use before the new command was designated. It makes about as much sense as having an environmental impact statement before buying a new computer for my house.

Since the Air Force has been designated to provide for cyber command warfare, it is not clear to me whether this facility will be limited to just performing that function for the Air Force or for the entire DOD.

Update: If you are looking for a job in the Cyber Command, you might start with an Air Force recruiter.

    How do I get a job there? Are they hiring civilian or only military people? I have been trying to get in cyber defense job for a long time.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.

Apple's huge investment in US including Texas facility

Blaze: Apple announced a $500 billion commitment to infrastructure in the United States over four years, its largest commitment to domestic spending to date. Apple said it will expand teams and facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Washington as part of its new spending. The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.
