Hispanic tribal reaction to Sotomayor nomination
From the Washington Post:
Hispanics have had a history of voting for their tribe over non Hispanics. While Bill Richardson has survived this tendency other mixed Hispanics with Anglo names have been defeated by people with Hispanic names in some communities with huge Hispanic majorities like El Paso.
It looks like Anglos are whites maybe the only tribe that does not unite for its own consistently. Blacks also had an exception for Clarence Thomas, but few did for Obama.
I think this tribal response is one reason why Democrats were so insistent in stopping a better qualified Miguel Estrada from an appointment to the Court of Appeals, because they feared Bush would appoint him to the Supreme Court. When it comes to identity politics the Democrat double standard is still in place.
