New tally puts Zimbabwe deaths at 500 in election

The true death toll in the campaign of terror being led by Robert Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe is close to 500, according to doctors' groups and opposition sources. The estimated number of killings had been thought to be 86 but new evidence collected from rural areas witnessing the worst of the intimidation has prompted a five-fold increase in the tally.

"The violence is increasing, even after we pulled out of the run-off," said one opposition researcher, who preferred not to be named.

Doctors' groups have documented more than 100 deaths but are so overburdened with new cases that they have been unable to update their records fully. The collapse of the health system over the past decade and the exodus of doctors and nurses has left them unable to cope with the current "warlike" conditions.

Friends of Zimbabwe, a civil-society organisation, said that six people per day were being killed in a campaign that they believe has already claimed 500 lives.

The violence is hard to ignore and it is ridiculous to suggest that the opposition is beating up its own voters as the government has alleged. Many of the victims are also refused care. this is Mugabe's legacy and the legacy of his henchmen. When this is over they should all be held accountable.

BTW, Obama at long last noticed Mugabe's mess and Zimbabwe's distress. It is about time. What has he been waiting for?

With a new facility in Houston, Texas, Apple will reportedly double its investment in advanced manufacturing along with increasing investments in AI and silicon engineering. The company said in a press release that the Houston facility will produce servers to support Apple Intelligence, the "personal intelligence system that helps users write, express themselves, and get things done." ... The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.
