Florida makes sinkhole investment in swamp land

Washington Post:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) and U.S. Sugar Corp. today announced a plan in which the state would acquire as much as 187,000 acres of agricultural land in South Florida from the company for $1.75 billion and use it to help restore the Everglades.

Crist said the deal, one of the largest environmental land acquisitions in the nation's history, would provide a "critical missing link in our restoration activities" by reestablishing a part of the historic connection between Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, a unique wetland that is home to dozens of threatened and endangered species.

Under the deal, the South Florida Water Management District would buy from the company nearly 300 square miles of land spanning four Florida counties -- an area as large as New York City. The deal would essentially put U.S. Sugar, the nation's largest producer of sugar cane, out of business, company officials said.

...

Let's see, Florida is paying for property that will be taken off the tax roles so they can make it unproductive and a habitat for some critters. How much will everyone's tax bill go up to pay for this deal?

The NY Times reports that the environmental wackos love the deal, but it is right up their ally to make valuable property worthless. The Netherlands is lucky that these guys don't want to turn half their country back into a part of the North Atlantic. Why don't the wackos go talk Castro into turning his cane fields into swamps?
