Ignorance on display in Fort Wayne

C. Joseph Sprague " was bishop for the North Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church" and has written one of the most ignorant comentaries on the war ever published.

Sprague writes:

Several years ago, I was part of a Muslim, Jewish and Christian delegation that visited Afghanistan in the aftermath of the U.S. bombing and expulsion of the Taliban. This was during the infancy of the present government in Afghanistan.

Among those living in Afghanistan, who welcomed us and provided access to the hearts and minds of the common people in that devastated nation, was Marla Ruzicka, whose recent death in Iraq was reported in The Journal Gazette April 18.

Marla introduced us to countless Afghan orphans, whose stories pierced our hearts.

She escorted us to the land mine fields where Halo Trust, the non-profit organization made prominent by Princess Diana, had detonated 875,000 of these deadly weapons in Afghanistan.

Marla introduced us to the young Afghan mine sweepers who risked their lives daily to free their native land of these heinous weapons of destruction. She provided access to political leaders who were fashioning the new government and to women who were rejoicing in their newfound freedom.

Marla, because of her close relationship with innumerable Afghan people, knew the orphaned children’s stories. Because of her courage and the trust an abused population put in Marla, our group learned first-hand the horrors these children, their families and neighbors had experienced at the hands of the Soviet Union, Northern Alliance, Mujahideen, Taliban and the U.S.

Get that, the US is just like the Soviet Union, Northern Alliance, Mujahideen, and Taliban. Never mind that Marla would have never been in Afghanistan and permitted to help these people if the US had not rescued them from the Taliban. While civilian casualties mayhave been a part of the strategy of the others named they were not part of the US strategy. In wars witht he US civilians are put at risk when the enemy camoflages himself as a civilian and hides among civilians. This type of conduct is prohibited by the Geneva Convention because it endangers civilians and that is why people who engage in this conduct are not entitled to prisoner of war status. They are unlawful combatants. For Sprague to suggest tht the US is on par with these people is despicable.

Sprague goes on:

...

There remains in my soul the picture of Marla holding a 5-year-old Afghan girl, who told us about the death of her mother and sisters as the terrifying bombs fell onto them.

So much for shock and awe.

While it is tragic that some one lost their parents in the liberation of Iraq, many more parents would have been killed by the Taliban and al Qaeda if it had not been liberated. Hey Sprague, get yourself a picture of some kids orphaned by the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. So much for antiwar pukes.
