The Battles of Armageddon

I recently read Eric Cline's interesting history of 34 important battles in the Jezreel Valley of Israel. While the book is sometimes tedious with the author presenting competing accounts of the same battle in the fashion some Brit authors used to treat battles from antiquity, if you plow on it becomes an interesting read. One of Cline's more interesting theories is that the word Armageddon comes from the Hebrew Har Megiddo which traslate "near Meggiddo" which at one time was an important city in the Jezreel Valley. He examines eight levels of strata or ruins of the anciet city and ties them to various battles. Another point Cline makes suggest that the reason for many of the battles in this location is its position between competing powers in Egypt and Mesopotania. Napolean, who fought one of the 34 battles in the valley thought it the perfect geography for a battlefield.
