Democrats have not figured out how to win in Texas

Texas Democrats are sorting through what went wrong after their shining hopes turned to ash in November — and what it means for their long-term plans to take power.

The party was optimistic it could make pivotal gains across the state, especially in the hard-fought race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and Democratic Rep. Colin Allred.

But in the end, the party “woefully underperformed,” according to state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D), the latest gut punch for Democrats in a state they’ve desperately tried to turn blue.

“It’s sort of a Lucy-and-the-football story,” Southern Methodist University historian Cal Jillson told The Hill.

“Every election cycle, they feel as if they are on the verge, and if they just had some natural money to put into the race, they could close it out.”

But many Democrats agreed that the wrong message, wedded to a too-thin electoral strategy and handled by a part-time staff with little connections to local Democratic machines, ultimately cost the party potential wins in the Lone Star State.

The Democrats “keep losing because we are poorly organized and we are not talking to Texans about the things they care about,” said Carroll Robinson, former chair of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats who challenged Gilberto Hinojosa to lead the state party in 2022.

When Democrats used to win in Texas, they mostly nominated conservatives. The current Democratic party does not have many conservatives. Most of the Democratic leaders in Congress are liberals, and some are pretty radical. Texas is a prosperous state because of conservative policies. Texas is one of the largest energy-producing states in the US, and too many Democrats want to replace fossil fuels with a Big Green agenda.  Texans are also not buying into the "climate change" agenda that animates much of the Democrats.  As a long-time Texan, I can understand that.  I still find the Texas climate pretty pleasant and when it isn't I use air conditioning like most Texans.  I don't need it today; it is 52 degrees outside and sunny.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014. When the Congressional Budget Office crunched Obamacare's spending numbers, they estimated that only 7% of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored plans would lose their plans. ...
