NY Times:

Critics See ‘Chilling Effect’ in Alabama Immigration Law

The issue should be whether you want to have a deterrent to illegal immigration.  Those who oppose the law are usually democrats who see the illegals as future democrat voters rather than people who are ignoring the rule of law.  The purpose of the laws against immigrating here illegally should be a chilling effect of coming here without going through the legal process.  It should be the same for state laws that seek to enforce the law even if the Democrats do not want to do so.  I do not have a problem with treating illegals at the emergency room or educating their kids, but we should also inquire about their immigration status when they use those facilities.  To not do so is irresponsible.

The best way to deal with illegal immigration is to encourage self deportation.  It is the cheapest and most humane way to deal with it.  Policies like those in Alabama are needed to encourage self deportation because Obama has failed to deal with work place enforcement of the immigration laws.  His focus on criminal aliens give little incentive for self deportation of the non felon illegal aliens.
