Washington Times:

A U.S. Border Patrol agent attempting to arrest bandits who prey on illegal immigrants was shot and killed during a gunfight about 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border near Rio Rico, Ariz., 60 miles south of Tucson.

Agent Brian A. Terry, 40, was waiting with three other agents in a remote area north of Nogales late Tuesday night when the gun battle with the bandits began. None of the other agents was injured, but one of the suspects was wounded.

Mr. Terry, who joined the agency three years ago and was a member of the Border Patrol's elite Search, Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) team, died early Wednesday morning. Four of the suspected shooters were taken into custody. A fifth still is being sought.

"Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry was shot and killed after he encountered several suspects near Rio Rico, Arizona," U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement. "Agent Terry's murder is a tragic reminder of the ever-present dangers U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, Air & Marine and Border Patrol agents face as they protect our nation's borders."

The shooting is being investigated by the FBI and the Santa Cruz County, Ariz., Sheriff's Office.

Bandits long have roamed border areas, robbing and sexually assaulting illegal immigrants as they cross into the country.

If we were doing more to stop the illegals the bandits would have to find a different prey. The pick on the illegals because it is hard for them to go to the law and complain.

It is not clear whether the Border agent unit was wearing body armor. One would think they should be.
