Obama takes side of illegals against Arizona and American voters

Byron York:

When President Obama discussed the new Arizona immigration law with Mexican President Felipe Calderon at the White House Wednesday, he was doing something he has never done with the governor of Arizona. Although Obama has repeatedly criticized the law, he has not once talked about it with Gov. Jan Brewer, nor is any such discussion in the works.

If they did talk, Brewer might ask Obama why he took a foreign leader's side against a U.S. state on the issue of illegal immigration. In a Rose Garden appearance, Calderon called the Arizona law "discriminatory" and said it will lead to immigrants being "treated as criminals." Obama echoed Calderon's remarks, saying the Arizona law "has the potential of being applied in a discriminatory fashion" and creates the "possibility" that immigrants will be "harassed or arrested."

The scene left some in Arizona, and all around the country, slack-jawed. "It is unfortunate and disappointing," says Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, "that the president of Mexico chose to criticize the state of Arizona by weighing in on a U.S. domestic policy issue during a trip that was meant to reaffirm the unique relationship between our two countries." Far more distressing to some was the fact that Obama took Calderon's side.

There is going to be a voter backlash against Democrats and Obama on this issue and it will be heard this November at the election. Candidates outside Arizona need to start using this against Obama and the Democrats and hammering them with it early and often, because voters are going to get angrier with this administration the more they hear about this betrayal of American voters and the rule of law.

Update: RE, the comment below. Opposition to illegal immigration does not suggest that voters do not like Mexicans. What voters want is compliance with immigration laws. Since Mexico's immigration laws are much tougher does that mean Mexicans don't like Americans? It is a false choice argument.

  1. 64% percent of Americans don't like Mexicans? That's depressing.

At one point or another more than half of the country was against integration too. That doesn't make it right. Majority rule didn't make segregation okay then and it doesn't make this law okay now.

The rights of minorities should never, ever be put up to a popular vote.

  2. Interesting - I visit Mexico twice a year as a tourist on vacation. I have to say I do not see Mexican officials stopping Caucasians and asking for their papers.

On the other hand, in my own country, I am profiled. I am in the top tax bracket, paying more taxes that the average American and I am asked "do you speak English" OR complimented for the fact that I do not have a foreign accent. This law provides a free pass to those who want to make Hispanics feel like second class citizens..I never thought I would see this happen in my country. For those of you who say profiling won't happen - wake up - it’s happening today!

  3. If you are not "WHITE" racial profiling has always been there!...a "white" person don't know what it feels like!

This law is only attacking the hispanics, what about those Europeans that are here illegally too? Are they being frisked and asked for documents?

Such Hipocrisy!!!and double standards. I AM an American and pay taxes but why should I be stopped just because of the color of my skin or the language I speak!

You might as well try to go back to "slavery" times, take out the whip and TRY to practice lynching again...why whould anyone show papers to prove being "free" or a citizen? We are all humans! I am curious to find out how many Jews have been frisked to find out what is under their black clothing? Or muslims who wear their attire...etc...

Disgusting laws to accomodate their own who have been abusing our system for many years and perhaps their funds are now lessened???? PLEASE leaders....you are supposed to speak for all not just your friends

  4. I am not prejudiced, at least I do not feel I am. I am for anyone who looks at this country as their country, one that they would live and die for. Not change sides for. I worked at a western union office where every day trucks full of people from Mexico would come in and send almost their whole paychecks back to Mexico. They live several to a dwelling. They may live and work here but their hearts are in Mexico.

  5. "They live several to a dwelling." How dare they, the subhuman scum.

But you aren't racist, are you?
