According to Peter Cook it was something involving Jayne Mansfield and lobsters, although I would imagine the man who has to cut Captain Hook's toenails in Belmarsh nick could give him an argument.

Now the National Health Service has come up with a new contender. The NHS in Strathclyde is advertising for a 'Hair Removal Specialist - Transgender Services'.

The lucky applicant will be paid up to £21,798 a year. Professional electrolysis and laser treatment qualifications and experience of working with transgender clients is essential.

I would imagine that rather narrows the field. A strong stomach and a sense of humour are also must-haves.

Over the years this column has made a decent living documenting some of the more imaginative ways in which the NHS contrives to spend our money.

There was the GP in Peterborough who thought that prescribing Viagra to a convicted paedophile was a proper use of public funds.

And the NHS Trust in south London which discovered it couldn't manage without a special team of counsellors catering exclusively to the very special needs of gay and lesbian alcoholics.

At a time of high unemployment there probably will be takers of ambiguous genders. In the UK, they prefer to spend money on this than their military.
