The other Charlie Wilson's war

Houston Chronicle:

Charlie Wilson's War, the Hollywood blockbuster set to open nationwide today, is giving plenty of attention to a certain congressman. But not the colorful Texan played by Tom Hanks who helped move the U.S. government to support Afghanistan's muhajadeen in the 1980s.

It's another Rep. Charlie Wilson: a freshman Democratic congressman who represents a district in southeastern Ohio.

"I've been asked what seems like a thousand times if the book and story are about me," said the former Ohio state senator elected to Congress last year.

Wilson's communications director, Hillary Wicai Viers, knows plenty about the mix-up.

"When people first started hearing commercials for the movie, they thought it was negative political ads against my boss," she said.

One day, a reporter from Spain called the office, urgently asking for a photo of the congressman's recent trip to Iraq. When Viers asked about the rush, the reporter went on to describe the movie, "with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts."

Her response: "Wrong Charlie Wilson, wrong war."

The congressman also got a double-take from an airport cashier when handing over his credit card to buy a copy of Charlie Wilson's War, the George Crile book on which the film is based.

...

Some Republicans are upset with the theme of the movie because it seems to give more credit for bringing down the Soviet Union to a Democrat Congressman than to Ronald Reagan. No doubt history will give the proper credit to Reagan, but Republicans should go ahead and enjoy the movie. Charlie Wilson was a Democrat who actually wanted to defeat the enemy and there are certainly not many of them today. He was a "character" by anyone's definition. Republicans should celebrate the fact that a Democrat was on our side in this war and made a small contribution.

  1. lol - you think any self respecting Democrat is proud of the fact that this turd was funding Osama bin Laden?? Reagan's foreign policy was a disaster and an embarrassment to our nation and is only slightly less tragic then our current president's policies...
