Republican debate

The candidates are doing well for the most part. I think John McCain has been better than expected. Mitt Romney has also has also been strong. Giuliani's answers have been good, but his presentation seems somewhat nervous.

Of the candidates who are not showing much in the polls former Arkansas Governor Huckabee has been surprisingly strong. His comment on congressional spending comparing congress to John Edwards in a beauty parlor may become a classic.

Ron Paul continues to be weak in his responses.

At this point I would put both McCain and Romney as giving the most impressive answers. Their answers on the war in Iraq and its importance to national security were outstanding.

Update: Ron Paul nuttiness broke out when he blamed the US for the enemy attacks on 9-11 and Rudy broke in to call him on it.

Tom Tancredo got in a zinger on the hypothetical on what to do to get info out of suspects who had information on an imminent nuclear attack. While some were worried about enhanced interrogation techniques Tancredo said, this is nuts I want Jack Bauer to get the information we need to save lives.

Finally: The Republicans need to keep Ron Paul in these debates for as long as they can. He represents the position of much of the Democrat party and having him there as a foil to play off of helps Republicans and points out the Democrat weakness. He in effect fires up the Republican base to reject the democrat cut and run strategy in Iraq. He certainly made Giuliani look good and McCain too when it comes to the war.
