The Birmingham News:
Ice, water and Meals Ready to Eat are not the stuff of which gourmet dinners are made. But they are welcome fare in the Pascagoula neighborhoods where Hurricane Katrina took away power and potable water and spoiled the food in the fridge.Four Alabama National Guard soldiers were made aware of that again Friday as they rode through parts of south Pascagoula, their Humvee stocked with bottled water, bags of ice and boxes of MRE's.
"We're giving out ice and water and food right now," said Sgt. Billy Partain of Carbon Hill, a member of the 877th Engineer Battalion's C Company. "We know people need that stuff."
...
One of the C Company soldiers' first stops was at Resurrection Catholic High School along Convent Avenue, where a group was working to undo some of Katrina's damage.
"We're trying to basically still gut out the classrooms, doing some disinfecting with power washers, moving everything out of the gym and the cafeteria and getting this place ready for school on Oct. 3," said math and science teacher Tony Hollowell, a dust filtering mask atop his head.
With much hard work ahead, Hollowell was glad to take from the Alabama soldiers a supply of what he called "the bare essentials" for himself and his fellow workers, and he had praise for the MRE's.
