Evacuees were given appointments with dentists who donated their time, and some will also be visiting optometrists.
Katherine Shaw lost her eyeglasses and hopes to get new ones today after her eye appointment.
"People are really going out of their way," Shaw said. "The police here are the smilingest police you've ever seen."
She was among several evacuees who were seen wandering the streets of Downtown on Wednesday, getting to know their new city and wearing new identifications on cords around their necks.
"I'm liking the city, but I can't understand anything," said Bounds, who was often met with Spanish when he asked for directions Downtown.
But he enjoyed the low prices at stores.
"The prices here are ridiculous," he said. "I saw cowboy boots for $100 that would be $700 in New Orleans."
A total of 463 people were living at the center Wednesday.
