Trump and Italy's Meloni look to make a deal on tariffs
On Thursday, President Donald Trump hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House, signaling a fresh push for a transformative trade agreement between the United States and the European Union. The meeting, marked by optimism and mutual respect, highlighted a shared ambition to reshape economic ties while addressing pressing global challenges.
Meloni became the first European leader to engage with Trump since his administration announced a 90-day pause on the “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs last week. Dressed in a striking all-white ensemble, Meloni expressed confidence in the potential for a deal, stating, “I’m sure we can make a deal, and I am here to help with that.”
While acknowledging her role’s limitations, she added, “I cannot lock this deal in the name of the European Union.” She extended an invitation for Trump to visit Italy, proposing it as a step toward broader discussions with European leaders.
Trump, unwavering in his conviction, responded, “There will be a trade deal, 100%,” emphasizing fairness as the cornerstone of any agreement. The White House sees Meloni, a steadfast ally, as a critical bridge to the 27-member EU, particularly for negotiating a “bespoke” trade framework tailored to mutual benefit.

Meloni appears to be the best leader in the recent history of Italy. She is smart and also eager to cut a deal with the US and Trump, and may be a key to getting the rest of Europe to agree to that deal. Trump's tariff play may be the key to getting better deals for the US.
