Russia loses more tanks in new offensive

 Independent:

Ukrainian forces damaged and destroyed almost 50 Russian tanks in just 24 hours as Vladimir Putin’s troops launched a fresh offensive in the Donetsk region, according to a US war think tank.

The Insitute for the Study of War (ISW) said Russian forces launched a renewed attack near Adviika on Friday and “marginally advanced”, indicating Moscow’s commitment to offensive operations in the area “despite heavy materiel and personnel losses”.

This includes the damage and destruction of almost 50 Russian tanks and over 100 armored vehicles by Ukrainian forces during the past day of fighting, reported the Ukrainian General Staff on Friday, according to the ISW.

It comes as the think tank said a prominent Russian milblogger ‘Rybar’, aka Mikhail Zvinchuk, claimed Ukrainian forces pushed through Russian defences and advanced on the Dnipro River onto the opposite eastern bank, crossing into Russian-occupied territory.

Russia has lost a significant number of tanks in this war.  The loss is probably caused by ineffective construction and design and by a failure to use them in combined arms operations that protect them.

Russia's Kinzhal ballistic missile performs poorly, despite Putin's hype they're unstoppable, says UK intel

...

While the Kinzhal has the capacity for hypersonic flight, they don't have a sustained hypersonic flight ability and aren't as difficult to defend against as weapons that do, experts say.

Ukraine said it shot down a Kinzhal missile with a US-made Patriot interceptor in May.

Days later, it claimed it shot down an unprecedented six Russian Kinzhal missiles over Kyiv.

The destruction of the Kinzhal missiles was seen as a psychological blow for Russia.

The missile's manufacturer, Rostec, had claimed "there is no countermeasure" to it, with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said it "impossible neither to detect it nor to intercept," as Insider's Ryan Pickrell previously reported.

Like the Russian tanks, the Kinzhal missile is another poorly designed weapon system.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent announcement of Kinzhal missiles-armed jet patrols over the Black Sea was mainly for strategic messaging purposes, as Kinzhals' actual performance has been lackluster, the U.K. Defense Ministry said in its report on Oct. 21.

Military: Russian forces use new tactics, remote-controlled vehicles in Avdiivka

Russian troops are reportedly adapting their tactics by digging tunnels to launch assaults from closer to Ukrainian positions and using unmanned ground vehicles, Anton Kotsukon, the 110th Separate Mechanized brigade's spokesperson, said on air on Oct. 21.

Ukraine's reconnaissance units reportedly witnessed Russians using remote-controlled vehicles the size of cars to deliver ammunition, Kotsukon said.

The battle to defend Avdiivka is fierce because Russians keep bringing new resources into the fight, he continued.

"They have enough resources, very fierce battles continue every day, every day they throw new and new forces into the assaults - both personnel and armored vehicles, aviation, artillery," he said.

Russian troops continue to suffer losses in manpower and equipment during their attacks against Avdiivka, as seen in a video shared on social media by Ukraine's Special Operations Forces on Oct. 20.

This is probably a response to the significant casualties the Russians incurred with their human wave attacks in Ukraine.
