Dire predictions lead to costly shutdown in New York

NY Times:

Leaders Defend Shutdown for a Blizzard That Wasn’t

After the storm largely spared New York City, local and state officials were left to defend the decision to effectively close a city, in light of an uncertain forecast.
The uncertainty of weather forecasts present a dilemma for political leaders.  Being wrong can lead to costly failures regardless of the outcome.  It should give pause to those who are forecasting dire consequences to a warming world, but probably will not.  They have too much invested in control of peoples lives if they can push a dire prediction and the political power that comes with it.
