Boko Haram uses complex assault to attack major Nigerian city

NY Times:

Islamist Militants Attack Nigerian City in Sustained Assault

Maiduguri, the major city in Nigeria’s northeast, was attacked from at least two directions by Boko Haram terrorists, and initial reports suggested that civilian and military casualties were substantial.
Nigeria's military has not been effective in dealing with the Boko Haram insurgency.  The illiterate religious bigots of Boko Haram have been especially brutal with civilians and the Nigerian military has been accused of being brutal with the insurgents.  There appears to be no coordinated effort to protect the people with the exception of a few militia.  The people lack weapons to defend themselves and the military and the police are clearly inadequate to the task.
