Texas leads in new home sales

Houston Chronicle:
Texas has had more new home sales over the past year than any other state in the country, according to housing data and consulting firm Metrostudy.

Buyers in the Lone Star State closed on 33,177 new homes, 71 percent more than the second highest ranking state.

Here’s Metrostudy’s list of top states for new home sales:

1. Texas: 33,177 closings
2. Florida: 19,416 closings
3. California: 14,280 closings
4. North Carolina: 10,249 closings
5. Georgia: 7,280 closings
6. Colorado: 5,602 closings
7. Washington: 5,337 closings
8. Arizona: 5,309 closings
9. Virginia: 4,836 closings
10. South Carolina: 4,345 closings
...
No one else is even close.  California suffers from a tight housing market caused by ridiculous building restrictions that has pushed the average home prices outside the reach of most young people.  The strong Texas economy also has helped the sale of new homes.  Austin and Dallas were listed as the top two markets for young people looking to buy a home.
