Why do they call it a warship?

From the Daily Mail:

British rescue turns to farce: 500 trapped in Libya told plane is stuck at Gatwick and warship won't dock till it's safe

I always thought that one of the reasons you had warships is to go into harms way and deal with those who wish you and yours harm.  There are probably several admirals spinning in their graves.
