The Perry vs. White race for Governor in Texas
Can a Democrat Become Governor in TexasProbably not.
...I think the chances of White winning are remote. I also think that the Democrat candidate for Lt. Governor running against David Dewhurst will do even worse than White. In an email to supporters, Dave Carney, Perry's longtime political advisor, described White as a "hapless opponent" who has "morphed into a combination of Jimmy Carter, Mike Dukakis, Al Gore and John Kerry rolled into one who's trying to avoid letting voters know where he really stands." The Perry camp also blasted White for refusing to release his income tax forms in an attempt to keep voters in the dark about how White "amassed a fortune after years of public service," Carney wrote. That was just the first week of the campaign.
White has tried to take advantage of a potential $11-billion state budget shortfall, deriding Perry's support for a 5% across the board budget scrub as "Soviet-style" management. Unfortunately, his criticism of Perry's style also was accompanied with a refusal to rule out tax increases - a position the Perry campaign pounced on. Perry pollster Mike Baselice, says White's support for taxes, national health care reform and cap and trade legislation help define him as a "McGovern liberal."
Democrats are hoping the campaign of Linda Chavez-Thompson, a Mexican-American activist and union leader who is running for lieutenant governor, will boost the Hispanic turnout - and White's chances. However, the presence of a Hispanic candidate high on the ballot has not proved to be the door opener for Democrats in recent Texas elections. In 2002, Perry handily beat millionaire South Texas businessman Tony Sanchez in the governor's race, 58% to 40% even after Sanchez spent $75 million, much of it his own money, in the campaign. A Democratic Hispanic candidate for lieutenant governor lost by roughly the same margin in 2006.
And Perry has been courting Hispanic voters in South Texas, Jillson notes, by sending discretionary law enforcement grants to local sheriffs who are often major players in South Texas politics. The notion that the Hispanics vote is a Democratic bloc is also debatable. A poll commissioned by state legislators across the country who serve on the Board of Hispanic Caucus Chairs, released just before the March 7 primary, indicated 54% of Texas Hispanics identified themselves as conservative and 23% said they might participate in the Republican primary (Perry got the nod two-to-one over Hutchison among that group). (What's all that secession ruckus in Texas?)
...
With White even suggesting that the budget shortfall can be closed with taxes, he has blundered into Perry's political kill zone. Texans would much prefer budget cuts to tax increases, and we have closed this kind of budget gap in the past by reducing spending. I would not be surprised if White is not only tagged with being a Washington Democrat, but perhaps worse, a California one.
This really is the time when jobless American or any citizen and legal resident needs be a member of RECLAIM AMERICAN JOBS caucus. Only together can we stop this travesty of our immigration laws? Whatever our party consideration, we need to make it clear to all politicians that America belongs to THE PEOPLE-not to the open border demented fools, pariah businesses or the politicians themselves. There are three main enforcement tools within the United States. E-Verify, 287(g) local police alien enforcement and ICE raids. Reps. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Gary Miller (R-CA) and Sue Myrick (R-NC) have formed the Reclaim American Jobs Caucus to raise public awareness of the connection between illegal immigration and unemployment. To pressure the Obama Administration to vigorously enforce the laws against the employment of illegal aliens, work to implement legislation that will protect U.S. jobs from the impact of illegal immigration (especially to make E-Verify mandatory) Working to defeat legislation that will put U.S. jobs at risk from the impact of illegal immigration (especially to defeat amnesty.)
ReplyDeleteThe Tea party movement have many objections to the Republican usurpers and the majority certainly don't agree with Dick Armey. But then Steve Poizner would be a great win for California, as he promised he would halt the draining of public entitlements to illegal aliens and give full reign to ICE to investigate and place in detention the millions of foreign families living illegally there. Certainly Governor Schwarzenegger did nothing and allowed this epidemic to spread statewide. California taxpayers have been shoved to the back, when they voted for Proposition 176--eliminating benefits to illegal families. The schools system has slowly deteriorated to the bottom rungs of performance with crammed classes of illegal immigrant children and the inability of teachers to offer a decent education to the offspring of American parents. In the last decade the prison system has been the place of last resort, for the rising crime rate of illegal immigrants from across the globe. Border state hospitals including California are overrun by illegal alien families who cannot afford to pay, leaving the bill for the taxpayers to collect the tab.
