Sen. Stevens needs to go

The indictment of Alaska's Sen. Ted Stevens is not a particular surprise. The facts on which the indictment is based have been well known for some time. It is too bad it could not have come sooner.

I think Stevens is probably as responsible as anyone for the GOP loss in 2006 with his ridiculous overreach on earmarks along with his bridge to nowhere. Alaska Republicans would be wise to refuse to renominate him this year.

If Stevens were smart and had the interest of the Republicans at heart, he would resign now. As his conduct demonstrated in 2006 shows he is neither.
